We Made It!!

Hellllo Friends & Family! I made it safely to Buenos Aires…and encountered several good omens on the way. First, Mom and I sat next to a Calvin Klein model at the JFK food court. Meet Sean O’Pry. (SCORE!) Second, the two of us got an entire row to ourselves on our overnight flight to Buenos Aires. We sprawled out with our 5 pillows and blankets, and were the envy of all the seat-sleepers.

We are staying in the Vain Boutique hotel for 2 nights in a lively area of BA called Palermo before we head down to El Calafate. Its beautiful weather here, perfect for jeans and a tank top. I just need a little rest, and I am ready to explore my new city! I’ll keep you updated.

Argentine Countdown

It is already 2012 and time is flying by! Only 10 days ’til I hop on a plane and head to Argentina for five months. I will be living in Buenos Aires, the capital, with a homestay family while attending the University of Belgrano for my final undergrad semester. I finished all my major and minor class requirements and only need a couple more hours to graduate, so what better way take advantage? I will miss Virginia Tech and all my friends in the Burg but this is a opportunity I could not pass up! Since 2007 when I took a gap-year before college, I have had the itch to travel and explore, and I am so excited to experience a new part of the world!

I have spent my winter break anticipating Spring semester with extreme excitement. My days have been filled with good friend & family in Chapel Hill, Argentine novels & films, as well as active job networking. I am taking life as it comes and it seems to be unfolding in my favor. I will be using this blog for my own interest and to keep everyone up-to-date on my travels in South America. I can’t wait to tell you more about Buenos Aires. I have heard GREAT things about the extremely vibrant and cultured city. Before settling down in the city, my mom and I will travel to Patagonia to hike and explore the stunning southern peaks. I have a couple goals I am holding myself to while I’m down there:

1. Build and perfect my Spanish speaking skills

2. Get connected with Argentines in my field of study

3. KEEP BLOGGING!

4. Volunteer and get involved in the community.

5. Explore as much of South America as possible.

6. And of course, Be safe.

Rock the Rapture!

It’s Monday and last Saturday’s rapture was a bust. Believers quit their jobs, stopped paying their bills and waited for the beginning of their last day on earth, in which the pure-souled would eventually be sucked up and POOF, gone. Pure souls, ha, that was the glitch! They were no where to be found.

So called “judgement day” was almost too easy to ridicule. But is the joke on us? The wrath of Saturday’s banter is the increasing regard to environmental chaos in the US. Yesterday, Jopin, Mo. was hit with the deadliest tornado since 1947. Tuscaloosa, Alb. is only beginning to recover from the tornado this past April. Alabama residents have been sending supplies and relief across the US, to aid Joplin victims. The list of national disasters goes on, but I think what is most important about events like these is people’s compassion and aid for others. It is these values that truly re-build a community and bring the people together.

My friend recently showed me a company called Rock Your Cause, founded by young people in an initiative to raise money for a sick child. If your interested in supporting a cause through design, this is a great idea. Their slogan “Its a philanthropy that fits perfect” encourages you to “wear your cause” on your sleeve by helping create apparel in which the profits are donated to your specific cause. Given the epic fail of the rapture, it looks like most of us have a good amount of time left on earth. Winning! So, take that time to give back, even if its small and unnoticed. Seize the day.
